Squad Leader Invitation Letter and application

Dear Potential Squad Leaders,

Marching season is fast approaching and we are looking for squad leaders to help make the marching season go as smoothly as possible. The squad leader camp is August 6th and as a squad leader you must attend. This will help you prepare for band camp and the freshman/sophomore mini camp, which is also mandatory. You will become acquainted with your squad and teach the Newbies the fundamentals during the mini camp (August 7 & 8).

Being a squad leader is a MAJOR responsibility and requires the full effort of the squad leader.
As a squad leader you are required to:

  •  Memorize all your music. As a squad leader, underclassmen will come to you for help with their music. You must set the example.
  • Wear proper attire. You must wear proper marching clothes, hat, sneakers (NOT SANDALS) and bring sunscreen. You are a leader and must set a good example for everyone else to follow.
  • Be on time. Remember: “To be early is to be on time; to be on time is to be late.” Squad leaders should be the first to arrive and the last to leave.
  • Squad leaders are an extension of Mr. Bastien and the Drum Majors and you should act accordingly. You are leaders of the band and should always be on your best behavior and set a good example.
  • Attend all band related activities. This includes summer rehearsals, practices, games and of course Band Camp. It is also imperative that you are present for the entire band camp. If you participate in sports, being a squad leader will be difficult. You are going to be responsible for approximately seven to ten people and if you are not there, your charges will be lost.
  • Squad leaders must maintain a high level of energy and have a positive attitude. This means NO COMPLAINING. The freshman will emulate your behavior and you want to set the best example for them. Always give 100% and then some.
  • Most Important: Squad leaders are expected to HAVE FUN!!!
  • Please return the enclosed application or fill out the online application no later than July 12, 2013.
