School Daze Week of 12/26/12

The Thanksgiving recess is behind us, Black Friday frenzy still abounds!

I would like to begin by thanking all the student instrumentalist who attended the Hudson Tree Lighting ceremony on Friday (Nov. 23). As this was an optional performance, attendance was at 98 students or about 56% of the band. Add the Alum who performed and attended as well as parents and community members you have the largest tree lighting ceremony since the Alvirne Band program has been invited to perform.  I hope Santa Claus was happy with all the support this year!
Thank you to Mr. McNally and Mr. Kleiner as well as the many students who helped with the schlepping of equipment to make this event possible.

November 24 (Saturday) the Alvirne High School Bronco Marching Band and Colorguard performed at the Derry/Londonderry Chamber of Commerce Holiday Parade. Again, thanks to those dedicated individuals who braved the cold to represent our instrumental music program, Alvirne and the Hudson Community.  FOM parents who helped with chaperoning and uniforms thank you again for your support!  FYI  - This was a graded event (as are all our performances except where noted) so for those students who were unable to attend for whatever reason, don't worry -  I will have a make up assignment for you :-)

This Wednesday (Nov. 28) the Alvirne Jazz Band will be performing at the Barnes and Noble Bookfair from 6:00-7:30 p.m. (estimated time). Check out the flyer in the blog.  There should be a separate flyer for you to download on the AHSMUSIC. org website. If you cannot make the performance and would like to purchase books, CDs, DVDs, or a nook - go on line to Barnes and Noble and use 10880474 as the code.

Better yet, not only can you help the students in the Jazz Band defray the cost of their travels but you can help the Friends of Music general fund (which helps defray the cost of many things for ALL music students by following these simple steps.

1. Go to our shopping portal
2. Click on "sign in"
   a) If you don't have an account it's simple and no charge to you. Type in your email address and a password, follow the prompts.
3. When you have established an account find Barnes and Noble or any other store that you like to shop on line and have fun!

Every time you shop on line and use the FOM portal you are putting pennies in the FOM coffers. "Watch your pennies and the dollars take care of themselves" .  J Paul Getty

December 1 & 2 are the last leaf raking fundraisers.
How about those holiday calendars?  Please, if you are not going to sell the calendars, or purchase them as stocking stuffers or gifts - have your student return them to the music department as we have many parents looking for more calendars.

The Philadelphia Trip payment for November was due on the 20th. If you have not sent in your payment it is PAST DUE!   I understand that many of you wish to use your child's trip scholarship account but it takes time to update the accounts, so I might suggest that the November  payment be cash and by December you will be able to access the trip scholarship accounts for payment.

Here is a reminder of upcoming December events:
December 6- FOM General Meeting
December 11- Holiday Instrumental Concert
December 12- Holiday Choral Concert
December 13- Snow date for Holiday Concerts
December 15 - Band for Hire (All slots have been filled)

Enjoy, your week and I hope to see many of you at Barnes and Noble on Wednesday evening.

Mr. B
