The text of the second link (the concert): On the 29th of February, 2012, in the auditorium of the Carl-Orff-Gymnasium, many already knew that the Alvirne Jazz Band, directed by Gerry Bastien, is not a “normal” school band. But this expectation was exceeded. After two hours of jazz and swing—and one polka—the audience wouldn’t let them go. With standing ovations, the energetic public demanded encores of the talented young musicians. The quality of this school band doesn’t come out of nowhere. They meet every day at 7:25 a.m. and their teacher, Mr. Bastien, demands so much energy from them that the rest of the school-day is like a walk in the park. He is the head and the heart of the band, and he’s shown us for the fourth time here in Unterschleissheim that his band can compete with professional musicians. Concerts of this nature show that Jazz isn’t a question of age or generation, but packaging. And when so packaged, no one can escape this musical fascination. That’s entertainment!

All 23 boys and girls are students at Alvirne High School in New Hampshire, with whom Carl-Orff-Gymnasium has had an exchange since 1997. In April a second group of New Hampshire students will visit COG, and in July, 30 students from here will fly to Boston. We all hope that this exchange will continue to bring many students and our cultures closer together. And one of the best ways to do that is MUSIC!
