School Daze Week of October 17, 2011

I hope everyone is enjoying the fall foliage and that you had a chance to stop by PumpkinFest at the Hills House yesterday and hear the jazz band performance as they continue their fundraising efforts "Euros for Europe". It was a great time and we raised a few dollars to help defray the cost of the trip. Today, members of the Jazz Band along with their parents will be parking cars! Stop by Pumpkin Fest and enjoy the 100+ vendors.

Last week, after the success of the Salem Band Show things were relatively quiet. The marching band transitioned to the period DE and J Concert Bands, music was handed out and read throughs began. I will be interested in the next couple of weeks reading the practice logs as there is a lot that needs to be done before the Instrumental Holiday Concert on Dec. 7.

Well, quiet was nice for one week and now it's back to......lots of stuff! Wednesday, October 19 is the 8th grade step up night. This night will be a way to introduce the 8th graders to the marching component of band at Alvirne. We will be out in the field from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. The 8th graders will have a chance to learn marching FUNdamentals, as well as the Hey Song and Fight Song in preparation for Friday Night (Oct. 21) when AHS v. Spaulding. I am a little disappointed that the Spaulding Band will not be able to make it as last year we had a GREAT time enjoying each other's show and combining the bands for some fun stand tunes. It looks like Final Countdown wlll be a staple in the flip book. This Friday night is also very special as we salute our seniors one last time. Remember parents of Senior Band and Colorguard members we will be meeting on the track at 6:10 p.m. to organize and hopefully begin pictures at 6:20 p.m. as their are 38 seniors leaving us at the end of this school year.

Saturday October 22 is the NHMEA Jazz All State auditions. I will need all runners at the school by 7:30 a.m. for some final instructions. Remember runners to wear your colors! Last year you represented Alvirne like no other hosting school let's see if we can do this back to back. Those instrumentalist who are auditioning- this week is all about Jazz All State. We will have a couple of sectionals after school but during class time you will be permitted to practice in preparation of your auditions.

Finally, I would like to remind all parents that we need your support! If your child is member of a performance group you are automatically a member of the Friends of Music. Our next FOM parent meeting is November 3 @ 7:00 p.m. in the music room.  PLEASE  make every effort to attend so that  you will be informed of  all the upcoming news about performances and fundraisers. Speaking of fundraisers - November 5 is our comedy night at the VFW on Bockes Road. There is a buffet style dinner as well as a silent auction and games. Did I mention there will be comedians too!  Check out the flyer on our website. We need you there to make this a success!  Make it a date with your favorite person :-)

"One more time, once" Thank you for supporting the Alvirne Music Department in all it's endeavors!  I know we are busy, busy, busy and a lot is asked but  I think you will  agree  - we'll do whatever it takes for these great student musicians and wonderful human beings.

Have a fun week!
Mr. B
